Nahant is a resort town of rocky coasts in the southernmost part of Essex County. Nahant became a resort Mecca early on. Visitors stayed in boarding houses or private homes and the first hotel was built in 1803.
Steamboats sailed from Nahant to Boston daily and a stage ran from the Nahant Hotel and connected twice daily with coaches running between Boston and Salem. Tourism flourished and year round residents were few.
Beginning in 1870 construction firms started putting up hundreds of summer homes for visitors to the town. In recent times Nahant has protected its expansive beach and causeway and its residential status.
